Getting Rid of Google – Progress Report

nogoogle

So, a few months ago, responding to Google’s admission that yes, they’re evil, I moved the blog on over here to WordPress and vowed to divorce Google as much as possible.

I haven’t been especially successful, I’m afraid.

Reader’s been replaced (obviously).  I’m using NewsBlur, which has been steadily getting better and better. Other folks I know’ve moved to Feed.ly and The Old Reader, but I’ve been happiest with NewsBlur.

Semi-obvious: I’ve dumped Blogger for this here WordPress installation.  You know I did this for Warpstone Pile over three months ago.  What you might or might not have known is that I had a little-used RPG-oriented blog, Owlbear Stabbings, that I pulled into this blog last week.  I think it makes more sense to just have everything here. That means you’ll start sporadically seeing RPG-related posts here, intermingled with the hobby stuff. Sorry ’bout that.

And… that’s about it.

I can’t dump Google Authenticator. Heck, I’ve added sites to it.

I still haven’t moved out of Google Docs Drive into Office. I blame inertia.

I gave dumping Chrome for (first) Firefox and (then) IE. I couldn’t do it. IE doesn’t deserve the hate it gets, but ‘cmon. Firefox was shockingly just not comparable. Please, someone make a browser that’s, like, 85% as good as Chrome so I can dump it?

Gmail is similarly undumped, more due to inertia than to hotmail or whatever not working out.

I really need to change my default search engine to Bing. In fact, I’m doing it this instant. Boom.

Google Plus, the font of all misery, remains something I don’t really use. What’s vexing is that many/most of the RPG folks I’m interested in post there and not in the cacophony that is Twitter (for reasons that likely sound good to them). Ideally, I’d just add an RSS to their comments to NewBlur but, oh, wait. Bastardos.

I really need to find a free, angry weekend where I can write a script to parse my posts for images hosted on Picasa, move them into WordPress, and update the references.  I’m confident such a thing is possible, but fuck, I don’t have the bandwidth to fiddle with it.  For the time being, nothing new’s gone in there.

I could have, probably should have done much better in moving out of the Googleplex over the past few months…  but I’ve made some progress. And, considering how much the last couple of months have kicked my butt and how little free time I’ve had, I guess I shouldn’t be terribly ashamed. (Just a little ashamed.  A healthy amount of ashamed.)

Wednesday Workbench / Tau!

A day late, sure, but it’s got to be Wednesday somewhere, right?  (What do you mean that’s not how it works?)

2013-06-12 07.26.00

Sigmar help me, I’ve actually done some painting.  Not a lot, but given how the past month’s been: I’ll take what I can get.

There’s been quite a bit of faffing around with the exact paint color scheme I want to use on my Tau 2.0. I’m still not sure that I’m in love with it, but it’s definitely Good Enough.

2013-06-12 07.26.35

Here’s a finished, final model: all he needs is some static grass on the base and varnishing.  Sean P. will likely be happy to note that, in the end, I went with Dragonforge’s Lost Empires bases. In the end, it came down to variety, and thinking I could get the effect I wanted.  It’s turned out okay, I think.

2013-06-12 07.27.43

The only thing I’m unhappy with is the Fire Caste symbol.  Previously, I’d painted it black-on-white, and I don’t think it ever looked good. The slightest imperfection in getting lines straight and shapes even stood out. I did some quick alternative color mockups below: the second from the left might have hastily been done in Gimp, but it’s not too far from what black-on-white actually looks like. :/

Tau Symbols

The more I think about it, the more I like the rightmost one. I think I’m going to give that a spin before I hit the model with varnish.

Hopefully, I’ll be able to make good, quick progress with these guys.

Where’s my stuff?

What the hell?

Over a month ago, I placed an order with Miniature Market for some Tau. After over a week with no response, I threw my hands in the air, sent them a note telling them to cancel the order, and placed it with The War Store.

(I’ve ordered from MM before, and have been very happy with them: they cannot be beat on 40K RPG books, for example. This was my first time ordering GW kits from them, mail-order style.)

After the same sort of delay at The War Store, I send them a note and was told, “Hey, we don’t have the product. We won’t charge you until we do.” Which made sense: I’m totally sure that’s what was up with MM, too.

Of course, I just realized that was three weeks ago. What the hell? Was Tau product just that under-produced? Is GW putting the screws that hard to retailers?

Am I going to have to pay MSRP for my space-commies?

Wednesday(ish) Workbench

1-2013-05-23 15.31.49

Progress proceeds (slowly) on the Tau. As you can see, I’ve got some Fire Warriors basecoated, and I’m starting in on a final test model.  I’ve put together some Pathfinders, and I’m starting in on a… I dunno. Either a Hammerhead or a Sky Ray. Both, I suppose.

2-2013-05-23 15.31.55

What I’m doing here is something I’ve wanted to do ever since deciding to revisit my Tau a few years ago: smoothing out the sides of my tanks. Devilfish carry troops, yes, but how many hatches does a Hammerhead or Sky Ray need?

Or so my thinking goes.

Instead of putting the hatches on, I’m filling the space with some 2mm plasticard (not as smoothly cut as I’d have liked) with the gaps filled in with greenstuff and the whole mess sanded super-smooth.  It feels perfectly smooth, but we’ll see what it looks like when it’s been primed.

I’m probably going to do some plasticard stuff to the back of the tank when it’s assembled. That smooth space might work on the sides, but I’m not crazy about it on the back.

Anyway, we’ll see if it works out or not next week, I expect.

Wednesday Workbench

Wednesday Workbench 20310515

I still have a blog and hobby, right?

Nothing fancy here, just some color tests as I try to adapt my old color scheme to something a little more involved than “just make sure everything is covered.”

The base is about where I want it; there’s a wash to apply to the red dirt, but it’s the same setup that I used on my Orks.

The model’s not a done deal, but it’s what I used to work through exactly what colors (besides “grey” and “turquoise”) I’m using.  If you look at this and then look at the above model and squint, though, that’s kinda sorta what the finished product will look like.

Sammael & Ravenwing Librarian

Finally, at last, the Ravenwing models I started on a bajillion years ago are done, varnished, photographed, and (now) posted.

I started out both of these models with a lot of energy, but for some reason, they both turned into total, complete slogs.

I’m not especially happy with either of them; I’m just happy to be done with them.

Sammael

I bought into Dark Angels on this model when they first released it. It’s boss. Of course, for some reason I never got around to painting or really using him back when.

My new planned Dark Angels list calls for him, though, so I finally picked him back up.

It’s the metal model, of course. I’d considered selling it and replacing it with a Finecast model… but decided the hassle of dealing with metal < the hassle of repairing Finecast. I was wrong. This is too much freaking metal. Blech.

I’m really proud of the base. I think it came out really well. It looks a lot better than a clear plastic rod, and really makes the jetbike look like it’s floating. Of course,it’s holding up 8 lbs of metal, so I’m terrified about the glue not holding. It’s actually got a freaking nail behind that wall bit.

Librarian

It’s a Librarian and he’s on a bike, yep.  I feel like I did more greenstuffing on him than actually shows. I don’t know why.

The arm’s magnetized, though. Force Axes > Force Swords right now, but who knows down the line?

05-2013-04-27 16.28.32

Anyway, they’re done, and I’m back to working on Tau.

OPINION TIME! (Second time)

I’m waffling about what specific style of resin bases to use for my Tau 2.0 army.  I think I’ve made my mind up, but I’m at that stage where I’d like some external input/opinions before placing an order.

Context:

My previous Tau army had been based thusly:

Fire Warrior 1

The army will be painted with the same palette , more or less. Bright turquoise.

What I envision is is something that would pair well with the basing scheme I use with my Orks. Obviously not the same (since I’d just base with ballast and cork), but similar.

IMG_3800

I need the ability to build up terrain to hide flyer flight stands.

So: I’m looking for badlands-y terrain that’ll look good in brownish/orangish/reddish tones. Ground/terrain is a must, ruins are secondary.

Also; looking at what I’m looking at might help paint the picture in my head.

What I’m looking at:

  • DragonForge Broken Wasteland – Good visual variety, and mostly terrain. I’d like some artificial stuff on there, but it’s not the end of the world.  Not exactly in love with the pattern/distribution of the cracked earth, though.
  • DragonForge Lost Empires – I love the hexes. It’s one of Jeff’s most complete ranges. However: I’m pretty sure this range was made for Tau, and I’d like to be a little unique. It’s also way too heavy on the tiles. I need something 80% terrain 20% man- (Tau-?) made; not the other way around.
  • Secret Weapon Ancient Sands – Basically the same as the DF Broken Wasteland, but I like the cracked earth patterns more, and I think the dirt/cracked earth relationship is more realistic. I hate the stones, though.
  • Secret Weapon Desert Basin – Isn’t bad, and is definitely on the right track… but I can’t help but feel like I’d get close-enough results from saving the money and just doing myself. Ditto their Desert Mesa and Desert Wasteland line.  And, if that’s the case, what’s the point?
  • could just do them myself. Base them basically the same way I’m doing the Orks. That’s an option, but I’d like to drop these models onto some sharp looking bases.

Well, what do folks think?  Are there any lines that sort of fit what I’m looking for that I should know about?

IF YOU ENABLE GOOGLE+ COMMENTS ON YOUR BLOG

Google’s made it so you can use Google+ to handle your comments on Blogger.

Except, whoops, when you do that ONLY people with Google+ accounts can comment on your blog. So, enabling that feature locks out anyone who doesn’t want to use Google+.

So, don’t do that.

Until, of course, they make it mandatory.

(Very glad I shifted to WordPress.)
